Light and Color Therapeutics with Essential Oils and Gemstones Synergies
16 Mar, 2025
Hello Everyone,
I hope your weekend is relaxing and the coming week brings you higher success and wellbeing.
Information comes from an infinite number of sources. Those signals are capable of directly or indirectly exerting an impact on a dynamic system. The three vehicles of information from the natural world and the cosmos utilized in the art of Spiritual PhytoEssencing (SPE) are: essential oils, gemstone essences and color light waves.
In the last couple of years or so, I have been more strongly drawn to the use of color and light as healing agents. Since the beginning of Spiritual PhytoEssencing (SPE), I have incorporated color associations into some of the essential oil chapters in my Synthesis Materia Medica/Spiritualis of Essential Oils (e.g., Lemongrass and the Color Yellow; Rosewood and the Color Pink, etc.). However, these discussions were limited to the scope of expanding understanding of the inner nature of the those oils. In other words, by understanding the properties of a particular color, the blender gains a greater understanding of the inner nature of an associated oil.
A few years ago, I began the study of a healing art called Colorpuncture, developed over the course of 40+ years by a brilliant German naturopath named Peter Mandel and started working with devices that deliver color light to acupoints, chakras, neuro-lymphatic reflex points, etc.
Colorpuncture involves the application of different colored lights, instead of needles, to various acupoints. Dr. Mandel asserts that the light is absorbed through the acupoints and transmitted along the acupoint meridians to the various organs. I find it to be very well elaborated, insightful and a potentially high-impact healing method that could expand your skill set as a practitioner. I find the system to be brilliantly conceived and, indeed, a high-impact natural healing method.
This started me thinking about ways to make color and color light a more prominent aspect of the practice of SPE. In other words, ways to synergize the use of SPE blends and gemstone essences with colored light. I began mapping out my strategies in this regard and experimenting with their use. In the next few months, after I completely elaborated its full content and process, I introduced SPE ColorEssencing as part of the continuously evolving art of SPE. So this newsletter introduces you to the topic and the resources available on my website to learn more.
Principles of Light and Color
Each color we perceive is associated with a specific wavelength of light. This phenomenon is a result of how our eyes and brain interpret different wavelengths as distinct colors. From the warm hues of red to the cool tones of blue, every color has its own unique wavelength that contributes to the visual spectrum we experience.
Color is light and light is color. Light that falls on a surface is partly absorbed and partly reflected. Our eyes register this as “color.” When it is dark, we do not see colors. White is a mix of all the possible colors of the visible spectrum.
Without sunlight there could be no life on Earth. The primary form of light therapy is sunbathing. In ancient Greece, prisms were placed into the walls of certain healing temples, and patients were treated with the colored light rays. Herodotus developed heliotherapy, a method of treating patients with sunlight. The 1903 Nobel Prize went to Denmark’s Niels Finsen for his discovery that sunlight could heal skin tuberculosis.
One of the body’s most important receptor mediums is the skin. For thousands of years, Chinese doctors have used acupoints located on the surface of the skin to regulate the body’s energetics. In fact, the skin is a type of “brain” that receives signals from the outer environment and relays this information to the cranial brain and other processing centers within the body.
It has been shown that all the cells of the body (with the exception of cancer cells) emit light waves referred to as biophotons. External natural light (i.e., sunlight and moonlight) provides information, absorbed via the eyes and skin, which helps guide the internal light organization. There is evidence that this light organization is essential for the regulation of all cellular functions. Thus, a deficiency of exposure to natural light and the information it provides, leads to the dissemination of “misinformation” along the cellular regulatory pathways.
Wavelengths of light communicate information through their steady transmission of signals. Each wavelength provides specific and unique information.
Color light can communicate very complex messages depending upon which colors are used, in which sequence and which synergistic factors such as essential oils, gemstones, acupoint massage, moxa, etc.
Dr. Fritz Popp, a German physicist, discovered that the body cells radiate light. He called these light waves – biophotons. He found that these photons pass on information to other cells by means of light.
Therapeutically, color light therapy can be defined as treatment with luminous, radiant energy. In his book Color Meditation, S.G.J. Ouseley writes: “Each color has seven aspects. Each color vitalizes, animates, heals, enlightens, supplies, inspires and fulfils.”
In one article I was reading, the author referenced a book she described as being “the classic” one on color therapy (aka chromotherapy). That book, entitled The Principles of Light and Color by Dr. Edwin D. Babbitt, was published in 1878. I managed to purchase a copy and am finding it to be a rich source of very useful information regarding color therapy.
A lot of the color therapy back then employed colored glass window panes that the subject of the therapy would sit by and allow the daylight filtering through to either treat the entire body or a specific area of the body. Another common method, in this era before the advent of electrical power was to shine the light of a kerosene lamp filtered through a particular hue of colored glass upon specific areas of the body.
One of the things I really like about this book is that it contains actual case-studies by physicians of that era describing cases they treated using colored light. Here is one of the briefer case studies regarding a tumor on an infant’s face, presented by a physician named William McLaury, M.D.
“In a little girl one month old, was found a hard, resisting tumor about the size of a robin’s egg, in the sub-maxillary region [below the cheekbone] of the left side.
I had the child placed in such a position that the rays of light through blue glass should impinge upon it, one hour at least each day.
The tumor disappeared entirely within 40 days. The child has developed astonishingly; is now 7 months old; is exceedingly bright and happy; has not known as hour’s sickness or discomfort.
Its peculiar freedom from infantile ills, I attribute, at least in some degree, to the influence of Blue Light.”
Dr. Babbitt comments on this case: “If a lens had been used in the above case to concentrate the rays in one place, and yellow-orange glass, which has the rousing power of yellow and red, to animate the nerves and blood, alternated at times with blue, the cure would doubtless have been performed several times as soon.”
In the revised 2025 edition of the SPE Repertory of Essential Oils (which will be made available toward the end of this year) will feature rubrics for each color that lists all the essential oils associated with that color. This way if you are going to use a certain color healing protocol (e.g., red light for the lumbar spine, orange light for the thoracic spine and yellow light for the cervical spine), you can select certain oils based upon their color associations to massage into the treated areas after exposure to the color light waves.

The Hi-Tech Duo PEMF machine comes with a dual channel control unit and offers a choice of 5 applicators - single loop, double loop, paddles, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) paddles and Duo mats.
The Duo mats allow treating the entire body from top and bottom, aka sandwich the body between the PEMF mat and blanket. The Helmholtz magnetic field thus created, allows deeper more uniform penetration of the PEMFs generated by the machine. The lower whole-body PEMF mat has a stick-on pillow. The top mat or “blanket” is a little lighter.
The core technology of the Duo is based on the single channel machine, the Hi-Tech High-Intensity PEMF Machine which has some great reviews and the one that Dr. Berkowsky uses in his PEMF creative use manual.
Dr. Bruce Berkowsky (N.M.D., H.M.C., M.H.) has devoted himself as a teacher and practitioner of the art and science of natural healing for over 40 years. He has constructed a dynamic system of health creation from a synthesis of the complementary aspects of traditional naturopathy, classical homeopathy, western science, traditional eastern healing arts and anthroposophical science. He applies modern physiological and biochemical knowledge into a context that acknowledges the unity of human life with the fundamental elements and rhythms of nature. And for the past 30 years Dr. Berkowsky has devoted much of his attention to the development of the art of Spiritual PhytoEssencing (SPE), a system of deep, soul-level healing work with essential oils.
