Myrtle Oil and the Theme of Exile; Featured Articles & More!

Hello Everyone,

I hope you will enjoy reading this newsletter and can see how the entire Easter story is a code for the wisdom of Kabbalah and how to make connections to the Vital Chi that resurrects whatever we lost in our life, be it happiness, health, relationships or prosperity.

The traditional story of Passover tells of slavery, exile, and eventual freedom for the Israelites from the land of Egypt. The book of Exodus relates how the Israelites were in bondage in Egypt for 400 years. Ultimately, Moses won freedom for his people, and received divine instructions to lead them out of slavery and “into a land flowing with milk and honey,” a journey that ultimately took 40 years to complete.

Accordingly, one of the central themes of the Passover story is that of being in exile. This is a highly relevant theme in this modern era characterized by divisiveness and separation between countries, among those with differing beliefs, within families, relationships etc. Also, the circumstances of modern existence cause many individuals to conform to the ideas and expectations of others, thus becoming enmeshed in a mode of socially controlled behavior and consequently estranged from his or her true soul nature.

Myrtle oil is one of the leading essential oils associated with this theme of being in exile.

Kabbalah, Birth Trauma and the Theme of Exile

A central feature of Lurianic Kabbalism (the Kabbalistic system based upon the teachings of Rabbi Isaac Luria, a great 16th century Kabbalist) is the concept of tsimtsum: God’s withdrawal from the central point of the spirit dimension which resulted in a vacated space in which finite creation could unfold. Subsequently, a measured line of light drawn from the encompassing infinite light was introduced into this void, from which a series of worlds or dimensions were generated.

This withdrawal or self-banishment of divine essence into itself is the primordial exile that, while facilitating creation, is the template for all the forms of separation and exile that underlie the existence of harsh judgment and evil.

Without this self-limitation, expressed in this act of concealment or contraction, the entire universe would be filled with infinite light and nothing whatsoever could be distinguished from that light. In creating a finite world, therefore, the divine must contract or conceal an aspect of itself in order to "make room," as it were, for finite, semi-autonomous existence.

The Myrtle Oil Individual

Scriptural clues to the inner soul nature of myrtle oil are provided in the Book of Esther; a story about the Jews in exile in Babylon. The Hebrew name for myrtle is hadas, and Esther’s original name is Hadassah, meaning the myrtle or myrtle branch.

Symptoms for which myrtle oil may prove of value include: anger; blame; irritation; frustration; anxiety; fear; fear of illness and/or death; despair; lack of composure; distraction; materialistic yearnings; insomnia.

On a psycho-spiritual level myrtle oil is thought to: promote feelings of self-worth; help overcome emotional repression by encouraging verbal expression; sedate the lower mind and enhance connection with the higher self and intuitive processes; bring knowledge and understanding.

Clearly, the theme of separation and exile from one’s higher self are central to the inner nature of myrtle oil.

I have found that individuals requiring the homeopathic remedy Stannum, prepared from a triturations of tin, often have a strong affinity for myrtle oil. Myrtle oil and Stannum are not interchangeable remedies. As there are broad areas of divergence between the two symptom pictures, not everyone who requires Stannum will be have an equal affinity for myrtle oil. Working from the other side of the equation, Stannum will be only indicated for certain myrtle individuals.

Nevertheless, there are areas of congruence between the myrtle oil and Stannum pictures and when these areas are relevant in a particular case, the synergy between the two remedies is striking. Hence, a review of the following relevant Stannum symptoms can help expand our understanding of the soul-nature of myrtle oil: agitation and anguish; nervous excitement; sad, hypochondriacal humor; fretfulness; ill humor with dislike of society; taciturnity; uneasy, does not know what to do for herself; discouragement; earnest application to business with inability to complete anything undertaken; anxiety and sadness before menses; feels like crying all the time.

Isaiah 55:13 reads: “Instead of the thorn bush, the cypress will come up, and instead of the nettle, the myrtle will come up. And it will be a memorial to the Lord, for an everlasting sign will not be cut off.” In this verse we have the myrtle theme of being “cut-off”. It is inferred that the replacement of harsh judgment with abundant giving imparts a permanent connection to the higher worlds.

The myrtle oil type’s case will often feature an element of the good versus evil dialectic. Perhaps there was a violent father and a self-sacrificing mother or an event that took place during which the myrtle type was challenged by a truly dark force and survived it by holding on to her connection to what is good.

Often, the myrtle type will report anger at injustice or a desire to help the oppressed or to save the environment from avaricious businessman and politicians, etc. Importantly, the element of judgment will run throughout the myrtle type’s case. There will be incidences of harsh judgment, lack of judgment and conflicted judgment.

Please note: Myrtle oil (In Spiritual PhytoEssencing, green myrtle oil is preferred) is for external use only. The oil should not be applied to the facial region of infants or small children as this has been known to induce glottal or bronchial spasm, asthma-like attacks and even respiratory failure. Concentrated internal use or external application of the oil may cause mucosal or skin irritation respectively.

In Spiritual PhytoEssencing, myrtle, like all the other essential oils, is used in small amounts in combination with a group of other oils and the subsequent blend and, when applied to the skin, is first diluted in a carrier oil. Hence, the amount of myrtle oil experienced at any one time is very small.

As a traditional naturopath since the early 70s, I've developed systems to make the individual whole again by strengthening the astral body.

The ancient Hindu text Srimad Bhagavatam teaches: “Having achieved human birth, a rare and blessed incarnation, the wise man, leaving all vanity to those who are vain, should strive to know God, and Him only, before life passes into death.

We generally forsake our true selves in early childhood when we are taught that they are not enough. We then exchange our natural expression of being for a customized survival personality that hopefully proves to be functional and meets the approval of our parents, teachers, etc. In the process, we become estranged from the true self or living soul and this estrangement fuels the sense of incompleteness, aloneness and disharmony we struggle with our entire lives.

The key to achieving soul-level reintegration via work with essential oils is the ability to get beyond a focus on their biochemistry and therapeutic actions and access and acknowledge the unique soul-nature of each oil that is the spiritual root of the oil’s physical properties. When this is done, the plant souls harbored within the oils will respond reciprocally and the human soul/plant soul encounter will be illuminated by spirit.

The greater the number of essential oils one understands on this level, the more dynamic the potential for creating blends which will touch the soul on deeper and deeper levels and provide the illumination to lead it from inertial stuckness and fragmentation to wholeness and soul-to-soul relation with all elements of the natural world. In this way one can re-establish the natural capacity, lost in early childhood, to connect earthly fire with heavenly light.

I encourage you to consider participating in the membership program. You will profoundly engage not only with the inner essence or meaning of essential oils but with your own as well. I am certain you will not find this type of invaluable information and training anywhere else.

As always, feel free to write to me with any questions you may have.

Shalom,
Dr. Bruce Berkowsky
