Live Class: Spiritual PhytoEssencing Palace Hierarchy Method; Featured Articles & More

Hello Everyone:

For me, summer is over and I am getting back to creating recorded materials exclusively for the membership program. I will be presenting a live training class for members next Tuesday, 9/9/25. The class will focus on a new method of blend construction that I am developing that I believe can be very useful for the purposes of creating fine quality Spiritual PhytoEssencing essential oil blends.

I have been training in, studying, and practicing various aspects of the Asian healing arts since the early 1970s when I trained intensively in Hatha Yoga at the Yogi Gupta Institute in Manhattan and in the martial arts (primarily Nisei Goju Ryu and Tong Soo Do karate) and Chi Gong. One of my senseis introduced us to a style of Chinese acupressure called G-Jo which I continued to practice for many years.

G-Jo is basically branch (symptom) treatment with little emphasis on root (underlying pattern of systemic disharmony) treatment. Feeling the need to to expand my horizons to root treatment, I trained in Jin Shin Jyutsu, a very complex style of Japanese acupressure. I practiced that for a couple of years, but found the underlying theoretical context too opaque and the explanation for the recommended acupoint selections insufficiently elaborated.

Then, about 35 years ago, while doing my massage therapy training at the Body Mind College in San Diego, I had the good fortune of having an acupuncturist as my regular training partner. We became friends and he became my first teacher on my long journey of being mentored by different acupuncture teachers combined with formal training that has enabled me to incorporate acupuncture into my eclectic style of healing work.

Over 40 years ago I earned my master herbalist (M.H.) credential from Dominion Herbal College in Vancouver, B.C. While my training there focused exclusively on Western herbal medicine, given my background in the Asian healing arts, I was immediately drawn to incorporating Chinese herbs into my herbal pharmacopeia.

Since 1986, I have been the chief supplement formulator for the natural supplement company Nature’s Design. Many of the more than 50 formulas that I have developed for that company feature a combination of Western and Chinese herbs.

In the last few years, I have been very focused on working with traditional Chinese herbal formulas such as the Free and Easy Wanderer for liver chi and blood stagnation, and Liu Wei Di Huang Wan for Kidney Yin deficiency. I have a lab in my office where I weigh and grind all the herbs myself. I make some changes to the ancient formulas as I see fit. After all, these formulas were created thousands of years ago to treat the conditions of the Chinese people of that era. In contrast, 21st century Westerners have a completely different set of etiological factors and patterns of disharmony.

With all of this said in way of context, it recently occurred to me that I could extrapolate an ancient method of Chinese herbal formulation (based upon the hierarchical organization of an emperor’s court) for the purpose of creating a basic, easy-to-understand way, for my students to be able to create deeper acting essential oil blends. I have named this method, the SPE Palace Hierarchy Essential Oil Blend Formulation Method (PH Method).

A Traditional Chinese herbal formula typically consists of four categories of components, each serving a distinct purpose:

1) Emperor (s): The primary herb or herbs that target the main cause of an illness. In the PH Method, the emperors are the primary core oils in the blend regarding achieving the main objective of the blend, or addressing one of the main focal points of the constitutional root of the person’s case for whom you are blending.

2) Minister (s): These are herbs that support the Emperor(s) by either addressing secondary symptoms or underlying core issues. Similarly, in the PH Method, these are oils that address components of a case that are either outgrowths of, or otherwise associated with, the main focal points of the person’s case (covered by the Emperor oils) for whom you are blending. Minister oils are combined with Emperor oils to either assist in accomplishing the main objective of the blend or to address, in parallel fashion, less central, yet highly related factors in the case.

3) Assistant (s): These are herbs added to counterbalance any side effects evoked by the Emperor and Minister herbs and further enhance the formula’s effectiveness. In the PH Method, Assistant oils support the Emperor and Minister oils along unique tracks in order to expand the blend’s dynamics and further enhance its effectiveness. Assistant oils can also deliver distinct, yet relevant, actions that help downregulate the commonly encountered issue of psychical resistance to the deep, psychospiritual action of the blend.

4) Envoy(s) or Guide(s): In Chinese medicine these are herbs that direct the formula to specific acupoint meridians or areas of the body, guiding the medicine to its intended clinical targets. In the PH Method, Envoys are oils that direct the blend to specific areas of the body (for branch blends) or of the psychospiritual landscape (for root blends), helping ensure that the waveform of the blend arrives at its intended destination.

Accordingly, the classical SPE method of identifying which oils are selected to be part of a blend remains the first step in the blend creation process. You still use the SPE Repertory of Essential Oils and the oil chapters in the SPE Synthesis Materia Medica/Spiritualis of Essential Oils to determine which oils the blend will be comprised of. Only after you have determined the list of ingredient oils via the classical SPE method does the PH Method come into play.

In the upcoming class, you will learn how to take that list and assign a role to each of the ingredient oils.

Members of the NHSS/SPE Students & Practitioner Group must have received an email with the Zoom link. To join the group, simply sign up for the NHSS/SPE Membership Program, you’ll also receive the Zoom webinar link for Tuesday. A recording of the class will also be shared after the class for those who can’t attend it live for any reason.

I hope you take this opportunity to learn from me and sign up today. The member zone will give you access to several resources and video classes to expand your knowledge and prepare some powerful remedies too.

Please feel free to write to me if you have any questions. I hope to see you in class soon!

With gratitude,
Dr. Bruce Berkowsky

Dr. Berkowsky’s Vital Chi Skin-Brushing System

My Vital Chi Skin-Brushing System which required hundreds of hours of research and experimentation to develop, evolved from my training and experience in anatomy and physiology and various bodywork disciplines as well as the Oriental healing arts. I designed this system to support blood- and lymph circulation, the immune system, the movement of Vital Chi along the acupuncture channels, all the major physiological functions of the skin as well as to enhance skin beauty and encourage the breakdown of cellulite. Yet, my system is quick, concise and user-friendly.

About Dr. Berkowsky

Dr. Bruce Berkowsky (N.M.D., H.M.C., M.H.) has devoted himself as a teacher and practitioner of the art and science of natural healing for over 50 years. He has constructed a dynamic system of health creation from a synthesis of the complementary aspects of traditional naturopathy, classical homeopathy, western science, traditional eastern healing arts and anthroposophical science. He applies modern physiological and biochemical knowledge into a context that acknowledges the unity of human life with the fundamental elements and rhythms of nature. And for the past 30 years Dr. Berkowsky has devoted much of his attention to the development of the art of Spiritual PhytoEssencing (SPE), a system of deep, soul-level healing work with essential oils.
