Stomach Dysfunction: A Modern Epidemic; Natural Health Science System & Spiritual PhytoEssencing for Stomach & More

Hello Everyone,

These days, seemingly most people are suffering from one disorder or another, and even if they do not complain of digestive problems, a breakdown in the digestive process is always a factor in the development of chronic disorders.

In Digestion and Dyspepsia, R.T. Trall, M.D. writes “We are a nation of dyspeptics and we are growing worse continually. Everyone is more or less dyspeptic now-a-days and because everyone is ailing in this particular manner, it seems to be nobody’s business except those who make opportunity of misfortune [i.e., the drug companies]. However, [overcoming chronic dyspepsia] should be everyone’s first order of business.”

Although it sounds as if Trall, an early American naturopath, is describing the United States of the 21st century, he actually made this observation in 1874. At that time, most people’s dietary staples came from family farms where everything was grown or raised without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, growth hormones, antibiotics and genetic engineering. Given this, it is difficult to calculate how much worse this digestive crisis is now when a diet largely populated with adulterated and processed foods has become the norm.

Dyspepsia is a somewhat archaic medical term that refers to painful, difficult, or disturbed digestion, commonly accompanied by heartburn, flatulence and other types of stomach discomfort.

One of the most common forms of dyspepsia has, in recent years, been given the name GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease. As is the wont of modern medicine, certain symptoms of common disorders are often regarded as stand-alone, unique ailments. In fact, GERD is a symptom of a complex network of systemic dysfunctions featuring a very prominent gastrointestinal tract component.

Part 1 of this discussion focused on the root causes and symptomatology of digestive derangement in general and chronic GERD (gastroesophageal acid reflux disease) in particular.

Part 2 focuses on specific nature’s therapies: cool-water morning draught and post-meal water drinking, the cool sitz bath, Vital Chi Skin-Brushing followed by the Alternate Warm/Cool Shower and an herbal chi tonic which may prove to be of good service in restoring vitality to the stomach and the rest of the digestive tract and in the amelioration of the tenacious, distressing symptoms of GERD.

Part 3 focuses on specific dietary measures including the high water content/high alkaline reserve diet, apples, apple cider vinegar, herbal tea and Digestive Wellness capsules.

Heart-Stomach Connection

Anatomically, the heart and stomach are located within close proximity to each other. While the stomach is situated below the diaphragm in the abdominal cavity and the heart, in the chest cavity, above it, the esophagus which extends from the top of the stomach upward to the throat, courses past the heart.

The upper portion of the stomach is in close proximity to the heart. In fact, the upper portion of the stomach is called the cardia due to its close proximity to the heart, as it is situated immediately below the diaphragm.

Osteopath A.J de Koning and cardiologist, Dr. Stefano Bianchi, who regularly perform cardiac ablation for irregular heart beat due to atrial fibrillation have found that visceral manipulation (a type of deep tissue bodywork) of the stomach can greatly reduce the need for ablation procedures.

These procedures use radiofrequency energy to make small scars in your heart tissue. These scars stop unusual electrical signals that move through your heart and cause an uneven heartbeat (i.e. arrhythmia). Cardiac ablation can also treat atrial fibrillation (AFib), a type of irregular heartbeat. Many of those experiencing chronic atrial fibrillation who benefit from visceral manipulation of the stomach have a history of stomach disorders such as gastritis.

Chi is the fundamental energy that sustains life and is present in the vibratory, biological processes of every cell. It is not synonymous with the metabolically generated energy derived from the oxidation of glucose. Rather, it is the force that animates the metabolic processes that ultimately yield caloric energy. When chi is deficient within the body, all the organs, including the stomach, cannot function at optimal levels.

Vital force (chi) differentiates life from death; it circulates through channels, or meridians, throughout the body. Counterflow chi refers to the abnormal movement of chi in the body, where it flows opposite to its natural direction or in some otherwise disordered fashion. This condition is often associated with various health issues, such as coughing and vomiting, particularly when the chi of the Lung and Stomach does not move downward as it should.

When the flow of chi is normal, it controls the directional dynamics of the various physiological processes within the body such as blood flow, lymphatic drainage and gastrointestinal peristalsis.

Clearly, the normal directional movement in the gastrointestinal tract is from top to bottom, from the mouth downward toward the colon. GERD represents a reversal of this normal directional movement. Instead of acids and gases moving downward from the stomach to the small intestine, they instead rise upward into the esophagus. This suggests the operations of counterflow chi.

This year, I’ve produced 2 series of classes on the diet, supplementation, cell salts, herbals, color therapy and Oxy-Vital Chi Gong breathing exercises, Stomach 36 acupoints, moxa and Spiritual PhytoEssencing.

The first series, SPE Fire/Earth – Cardio-Gastro Essential Oil Blending has video classes (4+ hours) and a 5700+ word reference guide.

It also features all of the chi gong breathing exercises, color light and acupoint protocols with explanations for each of the acupoints and colors used. I describe the acupoints in a way that does not require any previous experience with acupoint theory and therapies to understand. Chi Gong breathing exercises that are part of my Oxy-Vital Style Chi Gong System. I have been practicing Chi Gong for more than 50 years. The Oxy-Vital Style is an eclectic one that derives from a number of different Chi Gong (Qi Gong; Chi Kung) styles that I have studied and practiced over the years. The two breathing exercises I demonstrate, which can be done while seated in front of your essential oil diffuser, have specificity for the heart and chest region.

The second series is on Stomach 36 Moxa Protocols. Chinese medicine teaches that everyone over 30 years old should do moxa therapy on Stomach 36, and that those over 40 should do it multiple times per week, to maintain health and help ensure longevity. I have created several protocols combining Stomach 36 with other easily located acupoints to treat various common problems such as stomach weakness and fatigue. The moxibustion is done using a moxa stick. The series currently has 3 video classes wherein I discuss important indications for treating Stomach 36, including invigoration of digestion, reducing anxiety, resolving edema, building vital force and blood.

Parts 1 & 2 the discussion is regarding the use of moxa, color lights and essential oils on Stomach 36. In part 3, I demonstrate how to use both a moxa stick and moxa cones. Also, I described in complete detail the combination of Stomach 36 with other specific acupoints to treat with a moxa stick. Plus general protocol to integrate color lights and essential oils with moxa.

The first series is available in the video classes section and the second series is currently available only to members of NHSS/SPE Annual Membership program.

The next class will be posted in the member zone soon and I demonstrate the other form of moxibustion I will be teaching called Ontake, a relatively new form (developed in the 1960s) of moxibustion from Japan called (ontake – means “warm bamboo”). Ontake, if done well, can be quite magical. Notably, it is well-suited for self-treatment and is very easy to learn how to use.

I hope you can join the NHSS/SPE membership program today to learn powerful systems of: naturopathy, herbology, traditional Chinese medicine, aromatherapy, physiology, anthroposophical medicine, classical homeopathy, depth psychology, color therapy, gemstone healing, modern wellness technologies and the tree of life.
